Use Federal Funding to Retrofit Streetlights With New, Energy-Saving LED Technology

Localities across the country are using stimulus and other federal funding sources to retrofit streetlights or other public lighting with energy saving LED technology. Learn more about what federal funding accounts can be used to fund LED energy saving technology. LED lights use much less energy than the existing high-pressure sodium streetlights. Unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, they do not have filaments that will burn out, and they do not get especially hot, which means a much higher percentage of the electrical power goes directly to providing light. Some of the benefits to localities include:

  • reduce energy consumption and electric bills by 65% to 85%
  • last five to ten times longer
  • no toxic materials
